Structure

Why a worse site outranks yours.

You have more pages, better photos and a bigger team than the site above you. It still loses. Almost always, the reason is structure, not effort.

Google does not read a pile of pages

Most websites are a pile. Pages get added over the years, whoever needed one wrote one, and nothing connects them on purpose. Google reads that pile the way it finds it, as a pile, and gives none of the pages in it much credit.

The site above you is not necessarily better written. It is more likely to be a structure: one page carrying the service, and every other page around it doing one specific job that feeds strength back to that page.

What a structure actually looks like

01

One page carries the service

House cleaning, Manchester. That page has to win the search that pays the bills. Everything else on the site exists to lift it, not to compete with it.

02

Every other page has one job

A town. A price. A question people actually type. Carpets and upholstery. Cleaner or agency. Each one answers exactly one thing. A page with no job does not get built, because a page with no job is exactly what makes a pile a pile.

03

Strength flows up on purpose

Each supporting page links up to the page that carries the service. Google counts those links. Every real answer published makes the page that matters a little stronger, on purpose, rather than by accident.

04

The site earns the booking, not just a visit

A visitor lands on the town page they searched for, then one click takes them to the page built to close, because that route was planned before either page was written.

What it produced when it was applied for real

Exclusive Pro Cleaning had thousands of spam sites pointed at it on purpose, and Google had the business filed under the wrong trade entirely. The fix was not writing more content. It was the structure: a town page for every real town, a service page carrying the booking, a Google listing aligned with the site page for page. Twenty thousand four hundred times shown to Manchester searchers in 28 days followed, read on 3 September 2026, on a listing now rated 4.9 stars across 65 reviews.

A law firm's top three rankings went from nine searches to forty four the same way, one page per real search, links flowing up to the page that has to win, read on Ahrefs' rank tracker in July 2026.

The shape is the same for a law firm or a property firm.

Drawn for a cleaning company on the how I work page, but the structure does not change with the trade. Only the pages inside it do.
