Greater Manchester
SEO for local businesses in Manchester and the towns around it.
Greater Manchester is not one market. It is ten boroughs and dozens of towns, and the people in them search by the name of the place they live, not the city. I have done this work here for real, and the results are on page one.
How people in Greater Manchester search
Greater Manchester is made up of ten local authorities: Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. Inside them are towns with strong identities of their own, from Altrincham and Sale to Stretford, Didsbury, Cheadle, Hyde and Ashton-under-Lyne. Someone in Stockport searching for a cleaner rarely types Manchester. They type Stockport, or near me, and Google answers from where they are standing.
That shapes the whole job. A business that only has a page about Manchester is competing for the one search everyone fights over, and missing the town searches where the competition is thinner and the customer is closer. The businesses that win across Greater Manchester have a clear page for each service and a real page for each town they actually serve.
The work I have done here
Exclusive Pro Cleaning is a commercial, residential, carpet and end of tenancy cleaning business working across Greater Manchester. When it came to me, thousands of spam websites had been pointed at it on purpose, and Google had it filed as an Airbnb cleaner. Thirty three finished guides sat invisible on the site, twenty thin pages were competing with the money pages, and there was no page about any of the towns the vans actually drive to.
The spam links were found and formally disowned with Google. The site was rebuilt with a silo for each service. The guides were wired into their services and the thin pages consolidated. Sixteen town pages and two area hubs went in, each written about the actual town. The Google listing was healthy, so it was audited, left alone, and kept posting weekly at the pages that earn bookings.
Across June to August 2026 the firm averaged position 6 for "house cleaner manchester" in Search Console, which is page one. In the 28 days to 31 August it recorded 20,400 sitewide Google Search impressions. Its sister business, Exclusive Property Facilities, started on a new domain and reached 2,540 appearances in the 28 days to 21 July 2026.
What local SEO in Greater Manchester involves
A page for every town you really cover
Written about the town: the areas you work, how quickly you get there, the jobs you have done there. Not a template with the name swapped, which Google tends to refuse.
Hubs for the areas you cover
A page that groups the towns you serve in one part of the county, such as the south of the county around Stockport and Trafford, linking down to each town and up to the service.
A Google listing that matches reality
The right primary category, every service listed, and a service area that matches the town pages. If you visit customers, your address hidden, as Google's guidelines ask.
Directories that agree
Your name, address and phone number said exactly the same way on the UK directories customers still use and Google still reads, from the general ones to the trade-specific ones in your field.
Reviews from local customers
A steady flow of genuine reviews from jobs across the towns you serve, answered every time.
Manchester city centre versus the towns
The word Manchester on its own is the most contested local search in the region. Every firm with an office anywhere near it wants it, and the map for a city centre search is decided heavily by distance from the searcher, which a business based in Wigan or Oldham cannot change.
The towns are where most local service businesses win. A cleaner, a trades firm or a clinic based in Bury is a natural answer for a searcher in Bury and the towns next to it. Winning there first, with real pages and a strong listing, usually does more for the phone than a long fight over the city-wide term. The city page still matters, as the hub that the town pages strengthen.
What a strong town page looks like
Take Stockport. A town page that ranks does not say "we serve Stockport" and stop. It names the parts of the borough the business actually covers, such as Edgeley, Heaton Moor, Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme, Marple, Hazel Grove and Reddish, and says honestly how long it takes a team to get there. It describes the kind of work done in the town, whether that is terraced houses, new-build estates, student lets or offices, and answers the questions people there ask.
It links up to the service it belongs to, and across to the neighbouring towns a customer might also be in. That is what separates a page Google indexes and shows from one it refuses as a copy of twenty others.
The first month of work
Read where you stand
How Google has filed the business, which searches and towns you already appear for, and what the listing and directories say. Nothing changes before this is written down.
Fix what is broken first
A wrong category, a duplicate listing, directories that disagree, pages Google is refusing. These are usually quick and often move things on their own.
Map the towns and services
Which towns get pages, in which order, and which service each one supports. Towns closest to your base and with the most work come first.
Start publishing to the map
The first town and service pages go live, each checked on the site itself, each linked into the structure, each recorded in the portal.
Mistakes I see on Greater Manchester sites
Forty town pages, all the same
A page for every town in the county, each with the same paragraphs. Most get refused by Google, and the ones that are indexed compete with each other.
A business name with a town in it
Adding Manchester or a service to the name on the Google listing breaks the guidelines and risks suspension. It is one of the commonest reasons a listing disappears.
A service area the size of the North West
Google says a service area should not extend farther than about two hours of driving from the base. A service area covering half the country does not widen reach; it breaks a rule.
No pages for the searches people actually make
Prices, what is included, how long it takes, what happens if something goes wrong. Local customers compare on these; firms that answer them get the call.
Working with me from Manchester
I work remotely, as I do for clients in the United States and Canada. You deal with me directly, not an account manager. Messages and approvals go through a portal you can open on your phone. Much of the work is done and checked before your working day begins, and messages are answered within a day, usually far sooner.
I take a small number of clients at a time so the quality stays where it is. If I am not the right fit for what your business needs, I will say so in the first reply.
Nearby towns
I work with businesses serving Manchester and nearby towns, including Stockport, Salford, Trafford, Bolton and Oldham. A town gets its own page only when there is useful, specific information to publish.
If your town has no page here, send me your site and the area you serve. I can assess the opportunity without pretending that a town page already exists.
Questions Manchester businesses ask
Do you need to be based in Manchester to do this well
No. The work is done on your website, your listing and the directories, all of which are online. What matters is knowing how people here search, and having done it here already.
Can I rank across the whole of Greater Manchester
In the ordinary results, with good town pages, you can reach a wide area. On the map, you will be strongest near your base. I will tell you honestly which towns are realistic from where you are.
How many town pages do I need
One for each town you serve and can write something true about. For the cleaning firm above it was sixteen, plus two area hubs.
Which industries do you work with here
Local service businesses: cleaning and facilities, trades, clinics and professional services. The cleaning work above is the clearest example of the method running here.
How do I start
Send me your website and the towns you want work from. I look before I reply, and the reply says what I found.
